((OOC: Warning, long post is looooooong. I can't seem to write anything but tl;dr lately aaaaagh Also, please let me know if there's anything in the post that doesn't jive with canon, I'll be happy to fix it if I have to.)) "Are you really sure you want to do this, Niko?" The pale girl repeated the question to her older sister for what had to be the hundredth time this week. Having answered the question at least 99 times prior, Nikoleta initially ignored her, opting to continue her last check to make sure everything she needed was packed. "Aaaaabraaaaa?" The small Pokémon perched on her shoulders seemed to echo the younger girl's question, tapping her lightly on the head with a claw. The older girl sighed, shutting her eyes briefly and giving a slight head shake, mussing her short black hair. "Yes, Skye, I'm *very* sure. Here, take Aether for me, will you?" Skye walked over to her sister and took hold of the tiny psychic Pokémon, who hissed quietly in protest but put up no real resistance. Nikoleta raised an eyebrow at that, but didn't turn to look at him. "You know you can't come with me, Aeth. You better not give Skye a hard time while I'm away." "Braaaa....." The Abra sounded sullen, as though he was offended she thought he might do such a thing. After setting Aether on her own shoulders, Skye continued, "But what about your research, Niko...?" "How can I research Pokémon when I haven't even properly trained any of my own? ...Aether, you don't count." she added, before the Abra could complain again. "Even the Professor thinks going on a journey would be good for me... in fact, he was the one who gave me the idea. The Legendary Pokémon have been around for thousands of years, they'll still be around when I get back. Besides, the Orange Islands probably have their own set of legends. I never said I'd stop researching the legendary Pokémon while I'm gone. There, that should do it." The girl yanked the cord that secured her last bag and hoisted it over her shoulder, then stood, adjusting her glasses thoughtfully. "But..." A hint of annoyance worked its way into Nikoleta's voice and expression, and she whipped around to face the other girl. "But *what*, Skye?" The girl's eyes were downcast, with a few tears beginning to pool in them, despite her attempts to fight them back. "...I'll miss you." Nikoleta's expression softened. "I'll miss you too." She gave her sister a brief hug, interrupted by the sound of a car horn outside. "Oh, there's my ride... I can't miss the ferry. Bye Aeth, be good." She pulled away from the hug to give the Abra an affectionate scratch behind the ears, who leaned into the gesture. "Give my regards to Dad, Avalon, and Naia, alright? I'll call you when I reach a Pokémon Center. " With one last look back at her home, she grabbed her bags and left on the first steps of her journey. --- The ferry ride started out fairly typical. Feeling a bit lonely without Aether's company, Nikoleta planned to spend the ride reading up on the Pokémon native to this region. However, the information available on them back home was pretty sadly lacking. The only book she had she had was focused on the 3 starter Pokémon for beginner trainers and Nikoleta lingered on the page displaying all of them for a while, wondering what one she'd choose once she arrived... "Tough choice, innit it?" A voice chirped abruptly behind her, making her jump a bit in her seat. She whipped around to face a boy about her age leaning on the headrest of her seat, peering over her shoulder. He was tall and gangly, with tousled dirty-blond hair and a grin that lit his mischievous green eyes. When Niko said nothing, he reached down and pointed at the page, to the grass type starter. "Personally, I like Koaleaf. My bro raised one and it may look cute, but it's a real powerhouse if you train it right. 'Course, you could say that about all of them though, I guess." Niko's smile was strained, but polite. "Yes, I suppose that's true..." "So, you're a new trainer from Johto? What's your name?" She hesitated a moment before giving her name, not sure if she wanted to encourage the strange boy. "... Nikoleta Tavoularis." "Whoa, that's a mouthful. M'name's Zacharias Weaver. But you can just call me Zach. Anyway, Niko..." Nikoleta winced ever so slightly at his sudden adoption of her nickname - no one but her close friends ever called her that - but he seemed not to notice. "Like I was sayin', Koaleaf is pretty tough, but it can't win in a fair match against a Pyroo..." He continued rambling in this fashion for the rest of the trip, spurred on by the occasional "Mm" or "I see" from Nikoleta, who was vaguely interested in what he said, but put off by the fact that he never actually stopped talking and too polite to ask him to stop. Once the ferry docked, she almost bolted out of her seat in her eagerness just to get away from his rambling voice. Zacharias blinked in surprise. "Oh, we're here. Well, it was nice talkin' to you, Niko. Maybe I'll see you around sometime." "Yes, maybe... bye." Gathering her stuff together, Nikoleta left the ferry as quickly as she could without actually running, trying to put as much distance between her and the talkative boy as possible. -- Once settled on the island, Nikoleta immediately made her way to the lab. She'd heard stories of professors running out of Pokémon for late trainers. Though they were probably just a rumor, she really didn't want to take that chance. A brief chat with the Professor later (they seemed busy dealing with the other new trainers, she didn't want to bother them with any questions about legendary Pokémon *quite* yet), and she was handed the Pokeball with her starter Pokémon, a Pattle. She smiled and tossed the ball at the ground, calling the platypus Pokémon out with a brief flash of light. "C'mon out, Pattle." The Pattle on the ground looked up with her and quacked cheerfully. Nikoleta smiled, stooping to pick the little Pokémon up. "Hm.. you need a name. How about... Charybdis?" "Pattle?" The Pokémon questioned, tilting her head to the side curiously. The girl couldn't help but chuckle at that. Such a serious sounding name for a silly looking Pokémon. "Yes, Charybdis will do... do you like that name?" "Pattle!" She nodded vigorously, eliciting another laugh from Nikoleta. The girl began to lift the Charybdis up to her shoulders, hoping that having her there would help ease the loneliness of not having Aether perched there, but the Pattle scrambled up to rest on top of her head, laying there. Nikoleta made a face, not sure if she liked the arrangement, but the Pokémon seemed to like it up there so she'd tolerate it for at least a little while. "I'm ready for my Koaleaf, Professor! ...oh, hey, Niko!" The door to the lab burst open and a familiar voice spoke behind her. Nikoleta cringed a bit. She knew that voice. Zacharias strolled past her and started to speak with the Professor. She briefly considered running for it while she had a chance, but the boy whipped around as soon as he had his Pokeball, grinning ear to ear. "Well, unless you're wearin' a really fancy wig, I'm gonna guess you decided to get a Pattle. I got a Koaleaf, just like I said I would. C'mon, let's try them out against each other, you 'n me, right now." The excitement of the idea shone so clear on his face, Nikoleta couldn't bring herself to turn him down. So with a resigned sigh, she looked up at her new Pokémon. "Ready for your first battle, Charybdis?" "Pattle!" She quacked in response, determination clear in her voice. "Alright, let's go." She stepped outside, closely tailed by Zacharias, and sat down the little Pokémon on the ground. Taking a few steps backwards to give her room to fight, she was ready to issue orders. Zacharias took his place on the opposite side. The pokeball containing his Koaleaf was thrown next to Charybdis, and the bear like Pokémon appeared in a bright flash. "Let's give 'er all we've got, Marlock!" The Pokémon nodded, and assumed a pose that Niko assumed was meant to be intimidating. Almost against her will, a small smirk appeared on her face ad she raised a hand to point at her rival in a challenging gesture. "Let's get started then, shall we? Charybdis, pound attack now." |

"Alright, Koaleaf, you and I have a lot of work to do, and this'll be a great start!" Zach cheered. "Let's begin with a scratch!" Charybdis watched warily as the grass Pokémon suddenly lunged forward, and the water Pokémon let out a surprised cry and slid to the side. Koaleaf stopped short and spun around, ready to strike, but the Pattle now swung her head and slammed her bill into Koaleaf's side as Koaleaf's claws hit her side as well. (5) 19/24(5) 21/26

"Nice, Charybdis!" Nikoleta cheered at her Pokémon from the sidelines, already beginning to get into the battle. "Get some distance between you and the Koaleaf then follow it up with a Tail Whip!" |

"Tch." Nikoleta winced a little as Charybdis cringed at the growl. "Don't let it intimidate you! Give it another Tail Whip!" |

(5) 14/24 [-1 Attack](5) 21/26 [-2 Def] Koaleaf first stuggled as he was pestered by your Pattle. How this makes him have a weaker defense is... well... beyond me, but it works none the less. Eventually Koaleaf, fed up with the tail, decided to slash its claw along your pattle's backside. Ouch... |

From across the field, Zach whooped. "Good one, Marlock!" Nikoleta scowled at him. "Turn around and retaliate with a pound, Charybdis!" |

"Charybdis, how are you doing out there?" The Pattle responded to her with a tired, but determined quack. Nikoleta bit her lip. By her figuring, her Pokémon only could take a couple more hits. The Koaleaf wasn't faring well either, but from what she could see, he could probably outlast Charybdis in an all out attack. She scanned the field briefly, but nothing of use caught her eye, nothing but short grass and earth all around. The girl tsked again. "Stay on the defensive, try to evade his attacks and strike when he leaves himself open!" It wasn't a great strategy, but it was all she could come up with for now... |

Charybdis gave a small nod and lunged forward, slamming her bill powerfully into the Koaleaf's side, and the little grass Pokémon winced and toppled over after only getting a partial attack in. (5) 6/24 [-1 Atk](5) 6/26 [-2 Def]
