INSERT WITTY PHRASE HERE!

[ From Basic Training. ]

There was a flash of light that illuminated the sky, followed shortly by a powerful crack of thunder. Almost on cue, the doors of the Pokémon Center burst open, and Reia ducked into the building, sopping wet and shivering. Her breath was coming in short bursts, and her entire body was shaking. Clearly, she had been running.

She had been running quite fast for a fair bit of time.

Her assumptions had been incorrect. She had assumed that the storm would hit shortly after she made it to some sort of lodging. She had been partly correct; she had made it to Valencia Island.

And then the storm hit.

And she was still a good five minute run from the nearest building.

It was no surprise that she burst into the Pokémon Center looking half-drowned and heavily chilled. It was no more surprise when she went to the counter, requested a healing service, and then asked where she could get a hot shower and a blanket and something warm.

They took the Pokémon and gave her directions to the rooms that wandering trainers could use. She immediately took advantage of the showers, turning up the heat and washing off the dirt and grime and chill of the day. Ten minutes later, she toweled off and put on a clean set of clothes, tossing her sopping wet outfit into a small bin, where they would be laundered and returned by the next morning. She assumed. She remembered that Dad had explained that was common practice among Kanto Pokémon Centers, but had never mentioned if the Orange Islands did the same. They had a similar setup, so she could assume as much. If it took longer, then it was no big deal, she could wait.

She returned to the counter and retrieved her Pokémon, then headed into the lounge and released them, just for a quick appraisal. Pyroo, Pipun, Telaqua; despite the rigors of the day, they all looked to be in fine spirits and good health.

"Rough day," she murmured to them. "But it's over now. We can sl--"

"GET THAT THING!"

There was a crash, a scream, a screech, and suddenly something appeared in the lounge. Reia leapt to her feet and tried to get a good look at the thing, but it was moving too fast and too erratically. A blur of pink, a hint of blue, and she had aboslutely no idea what it was based on a couple of colors.

It crashed into one of the chairs and sent it tumbling, and then came to a stop for a few seconds.

It looked like a bird. Vaguely. But extremely angular; its entire body was composed of squars knitted together and colored in unnatural pinks and blues. Even its eyes were composed of triangles, and seemed just to be painted on.

It twisted to face something that was chasing it, twitched slightly, and then shot off again.

Reia stared dumbly at the blank space that it had inhabited. "What was that?" she asked nobody.

On cue, a flustered looking nurse ran into the room and came to a stop at the knocked-down chair. She was breathing heavily, her hair splayed across her face, and Reia realized that she was sopping wet. She looked down to the floor and saw that the creature had left a trail of water in its wake.

"Did you see it?" the woman breathed.

"See... yes," she said, and pointed after the thing. "It went--"

Without another word, the woman bolted after it.

Reia looked to her Pokémon, who returned her glance. Then they all ran forward.

They followed the trail of water on the ground, careful not to slip, and found that it wound out the back door of the Pokémon Center. Reia came to a stop and stared forlornly stared out into the rain. She could barely see anything beyond the heavy gray sheets pelting down in front of her, and was almost blinded with another flash of lightning illuminated the sky and reflected off of the water droplets. The roar was almost deafening, but she could hear, over the pounding of the water, the woman's voice, screaming out, "Porygon!"

Porygon. She recognized the name. The artificial Pokémon, a program designed to navigate inside of computer systems. She had never seen one, either in real life or even in pictures, but it matched descriptions that Mom had given her: as though it stepped out from a low-grade computer program.

She bit her lip.

"We gotta help her," she murmured. Reia shut her eyes, inhaled between her teeth, and with a quick motion to her Pokémon shot out into the driving rain.

She tried to follow the cries from the woman as best she could, but they became muddied against the rain, and spread out from all around her. She blinked rapidly to clear the water from her eyes and shielded them from the rain, but it did little. Though she was no longer getting water into her eyes, that hardly helped the rain. She looked back and saw that, though she had only wandered a few yards away, the outline of the Pokémon Center was becoming hazy.

"We need to go back in," she murmured. "I don't know if there's much we can do--"

She saw it, and turned her attention immediately. Pink against the gray, heading toward them.

Perfect.

"Telaqua, psywave!" she said, and Telaqua leapt forward and held its small paws out before it, directing a wave of glittering energy through the rain. It was pure luck that the psywave overtook the Porygon as it neared them. It let out a sound -- a bizarre, garbled sound, made stranger by the presence of the rain -- and crashed against the ground, disoriented from the attack.

"Close in, try and keep it down!" Reia yelled into the rain, and Telaqua shot forward, sending out small pulses of psychic energy at even intervals. Though it was not enough to damage the Porygon, the pulses were enough to keep it wincing and disoriented.

"Pipun, around the side, distract it if you need to! Pyroo, around the other side. Jump on it and hold it down! Telaqua, don't stop!"

The Pipun managed to get into the air, with no small amount of difficulty, and shot around to the side of the Porygon. Pyroo hopped forward quick as its legs would carry it, making a broad arc to approach from the back.

Before either could reach, however, the Porygon broke from its stall under the psychic blasts. It unleashed another unnatural growl and twisted around to face Telaqua. The edges of its body darkened abruptly and bled out into a point just in front of its back, a black ball hovering in the air. It twisted slightly, leveled for the Telaqua, and fired off a burst of dark energy. Telaqua attempted to leap back, but took the blow to the chest and was sent skidding against the muddy ground. Porygon, now free, began to move forward again.

Pipun crashed headling into its forehead and rebounded, preparing for another attack. Porygon stared up at it, and as Reia watched she saw that it seemed almost to sharpen its edges. Pipun twisted in the air and shot down to the Porygon again, but Porygon, anticipating it this time, leapt into the air and slammed into Pipun, sending the bird careening throught he air until it, too, hit the mud.

Telaqua was rising again, visibly shaken but still moving, and once erect fired another psychic blast. Porygon took the attack and turned, preparing itself for another dark pulse--

And suddenly Pyroo slammed into its back and sent the Pokémon into the muck itself. Reia ran forward, scooping up Pipun as she neared the Porygon, and Telaqua ran alongside her until they were both near the pink thing. It was disoriented for a moment. Taking advantage, Reia leaned down and snagged the Pokémon around its head, dragging it upright and twisting it around until she had a firm hold on it.

"Gotcha," she murmured. "Calm down, you... whatever you are."

The Porygon, in response, struggled against her grip and tried to get away. She tightened her grip and searched for a better place to hold on to the Porygon--

And her hand reached something connected to its back.

She jerked her hand in surprise and felt the thing disconnect. Almost immediately, the Porygon went slack.

"Good job, everybody," she yelled into the rain. "Pipun, Pyroo, Telaqua, return!"

With one hand still keeping the Porygon close to her body, she used her other hand, however awkwardly, to recall the other Pokémon. Pipun and Pyroo, she knew, could not be appreciating the torrential downpour.

"Oh, you caught him!" a voice said, and the woman appeared from the rain, her eyes on the Porygon. "Good job!"

"Thanks, ah.... what's happened?"

"Well-- come back inside," she said. "I'll explain once we're out of the wet."

She seemed to say something else, but she was interrupted by another flash and a powerful crack of thunder. Reia winced, turned, and with the woman nearby bolted for the door to the Pokémon Center.

- - -

After another shower and change of clothes from both of them, the woman, the Porygon sitting idly alongside her, took Reia into the lounge again.

"I'm sorry for any trouble this might have caused," the woman said. "This Porygon is a security program of ours, here at the center. It routinely checks through the PC system and clears out any bugs that might be in the system."

"I guess that's why it's here," Reia said. "But what happened to it? Right now it's so..."

"Docile?" the woman said. "It's not usually this calm. It probably wore itself out." She waited a few seconds, then continued. "During a routine check, it seems to have picked up a virus. It went berserk, exited the computer system, and tried to escape. You somehow managed to calm it, I guess, but I should run a diagnostic to see--"

"Um," Riea offered, and produced a small disk from her pocket. "Might this be the problem?"

The nurse blinked. "What's that?"

"I don't know," Reia said. "It was stuck on Porygon's back when I caught it. As soon as I took it off, it went slack."

"Let me see that." Reia handed the disc over, and the woman regarded it for a moment, turning it over in the light as though she could read the data engraved on its back. She frowned. "It's unmarked. Let me..."

She touched the disc to Porygon, and immediately the Pokémon jerked away and unleashed its artificial cry. It shrank back, almost fearful. The woman's frown deepened.

"It's a glitched disc," she explained. "It might contain a virus. Porygon doesn't want anything to do with it. If this was attached to it... this might be what caused it to go berserk. Although I can't imagine where it came from..."

"Hm," Reia murmured. She thought for a moment, then held out her hand again. "Do you mind if I keep it?"

"Keep it? Whatever for?"

"My father's a researcher," she explained. "If I can get it back to him, he might be able to figure out what it is and where it came from."

Which was true, but not the reason Reia wanted to keep the disc. Truthfully, she had no reason why she wanted to keep it, or none that she could conceive of. Something about it just encouraged her to hold on to it. Strange. Potentially foolish. But she could see no harm.

The woman looked at the disc for a long moment, and finally nodded, handing it over. "All right," she said. She was quiet again for a moment, and then plucked the Porygon from her side and held him out as well. Reia slipped the disc into her backpack and stared over the Porygon's head at the woman.

"What is it?" she asked.

"I'd like you to have him, too."

Reia blinked, dumfounded. "I'm sorry, what?"

"I'd like you to have the Porygon," she repeated. "To be honest... I don't think we can use him anymore. One of the nurses gave him a quick diagnostic, and found errors in his code. He can't integrate into our system anymore. He could stay here, but really... I think he should be out exploring the world."

"Wouldn't it be better to keep him at his home, though?"

"Maybe," the woman said, and this time she smiled. "But to be honest, his personality is a bit abrasive and unexpected. He's a good diagnostics program, but to keep him out and about in the Pokémon Center... he's a bit much. It might be beneficial to work off that extra energy. And, well, you were the one who... cured him, so to speak. I think he approves."

The Porygon, in response, leaned forward and gently rubbed its beak against Reia's cheek, letting out a low mechanical hum that almost sounded like a purr. Reia reached up and stroked its head, and its tail flicked rapidly up and down.

"See? He's happy."

Reia regarded him for a moment. "I suppose he is," she murmured, and reached up, taking him from the nurse's hands. "All right. I think I can take him."

The Porygon again ran its beak against her cheek, its legs waving excitedly beneath its body and its tail wagging again. She laughed and set him down on the floor. "All right, all right!" she said. "You're with me now, my friend." She looked at the Porygon for a moment, and a word formed in the back of her throat. She clamped it down and looked over to the woman. "Does he have a name?"

"A number, we gave him," the nurse said. "But no, not a name."

"All right." She looked at him again, the noded. "I think I'll call him Alias."

"Alias," the woman said. "Why Alias?"

"Porygon can convert themselves, right? It's like having an alias, working under an assumed identity. I guess."

The woman laughed. "I guess so. All right. He's your now, I really don't have any say." She tossed a Pokeball to Reia. Reia caught it and aimed it down to the Porygon.

"All right, Alias," she said. "You, my friend, are now with me."

The Porygon released another artificial chime of approval, and Reia recalled him into his Pokeball. She looked at it for a moment, then put it on her belt and sat down against the couch. "Thank you," she said to the nurse.

"Thank you for retrieving him," the nurse said. "If you need any help, feel free to ask. My name is Alice. As long as your here, we'll be more than glad to serve you."

She bowed, and walked out of the lounge and into one of the back rooms. Reia watched her for a few moments, then leaned back and closed her eyes. This day had been too long.

[ tl;dr: Now have Porygon officially for use by my character. As far as updates are concerned, please give it the nickname Alias.

A trainer with a small platypus walked up. You recognized it as a pattle! Either a pattle, or a platypus painted blue. Either way, battle time.

Reia blearily woke up when she heard somebody nearby. She pushed herself into an upright position and blinked dumbly at what was before her. Through her watery eyes, she saw that it was... blue. Something blue. And... ah. A Pattle?

"What's up?"

She looked up to the trainer with the Pattle and say that it was a bright-eyed young man with a rather broad grin on his face.

"You wanna battle?" he asked.

She looked at the clock. She had been asleep for about an hour.

"Battle? I just-- I just woke up--"

"Please?" He seemed to be almost skipping in anticipation. "It's raining outside, I need t do something, and you're a trainer, right? That's why you're here, right? Please battle me!"

Reia looked at the Pattle, then at the boy, and finally stood up and stretched. "All right," she said, blinking out the last of the sleep tears from her eyes. "I'll battle you. There's a place in here where they allow that, right?" She looked around and saw a little area that seemed fairly open and clean, set aside for low-end indoor trainer battles. "Come on."

She headed over to it, and the boy bounded ahead of her, Pattle in tow, and took his place at the far end of the room. Before she even got there, Reia had a Pokeball in her hand, and as soon as she stepped past the opening threw it in.

"Pipun!" she called, and the bird materialized before her. "Tackle!"

A tail whip. Cute, a bit disconcerting to the enemy, but nothing that Reia had any reason to be concerned about.

"Ignore it," she instructed, "and go in for another tackle!"

Pattle was not to be deterred as it continued to whip its tail at flies magically lowering Pipun's defense stat. Unphazed by the action, Pipun's Tackle attack seemed to get stronger.

Pattle was not being particularly... strategic, so to speak, during this fight. Which Reia was perfectly fine with. It presented her a massive opportunity to take advantage of the moment, and she did so without further hesitation.

"Again!" she commanded, and Pipun folded his wings against his body and dove.

Pipun struck Pattle head-on as it dive-bombed the water Pokémon, but Pattle and its trainer now decided to take advantage of Pipun's hindered defenses, and the water Pokémon quicly turned its head to slam into the small bird with its bill before he could escape.

Reia winced as Pipun spun through the air and hit the ground, but the little bird -- a bit battered, but yet undeterred -- scrambled back to its feet and shook it off, jumping lightly into the air and beating its wings. Without waiting for another order, it flitted a bit higher into the air, then shot downward to dive-bomb the Pattle once more.

Pipun slid into the ground as the Pattle moved out of the attack and retaliated. It leapt back to its feet, tweeting irritably, and prepared for another attack.

However, it was plucked from the air by a shot of white energy, and returned to its Pokeball. Reia placed it on her belt, picked up another, and tossed it out.

[ Experience for Pyroo and Pipun, please? ]

Reia looked at the little seaweed creature curiously. A lot of these Orange Islands Pokémon were unique and new to her; this one was no exception.

Also it was cute.

She checked her Pokedex. A water-grass hybrid; as she had anticipated. It was low-level, though. Which meant that it would not pose much of a threat -- or at least not a watery one -- to Pyroo.

For now, though, no chances.

"Growl," she ordered. "Try to intimidate it."

Pyroo and Pipun gained 70% and 50% exp respectively from the previous battle. Pyroo grew to level 7 and learned Ember!

Pyroo growled at the clump of seaweed making it lose the heart to battle. Not the be deterred, Kelpp wrapped its tentacle-y vines around Pyroo and used a weak constrict.

The seaweed tentacle wrapped around Pyroo and constricted. Weakly. Pyroo winced slightly, but it was apparent that it had done minimal damage.

"Swipe it again!"

Acquiescing, Pyroo lashed out to scratch the Kelp across the face.

Reia looked at the Pokémon curiously.

"What's this?" she murmured, and quickly opened her Pokedex to check. "Voltot," she read. "Electric, poison type. Level 8. So..." She bit her lip. So it already knew thundershock.

"Telaqua, return."

The plush Pokémon was drawn back into its Pokeball, and she reached for another, going over her options. Pipun was a flying-type, which would be easily felled by the thundershock, while she was... yet uncertain about the Porygon's abilities.

"Give it another go, Pyroo!" she said, rereleasing the kangaroo. "Ember!"

[ Call me crazy, but Conversion changes the Pokémon's type to the type of one of the enemy's moves. Conversion 2 changes to a type resistant to the last move used against them. Or do the Conversions work completely differently here? ]

"Let's try this," she murmured. "Dark Pulse!"

As far as the poke-bible serebii is concerned. "Conversion changes the user's type into an own move's type. "

Anyways...

{5} :porygon: 6/26 {Dark Type}
{8} :voltot: 7/31

The stab boost from porygon's new typing was helping quite a bit in his attack power. Its all down to who is faster now.

[ I might be thinking about the original way Conversion worked. My bad. ]

So close. Maybe, maybe this would work.

"Alias! Dark Pulse! And-- and move! Don't let it touch you!"

Although yelling something like that probably would not work particularly well, being so specific like she was.

Porygon got lucky. Voltot tried to Leer at it but the move proved ineffective. Dead battery.

Porygon gains 110% exp and grows to Lvl 6! You got 220P for winning the trainer battle!

[ I do greatly appreciate the mass of experience, but I'm afraid it was split between Telaqua, Pyroo, and Porygon.
Additionally, using the Dig TM on Pyroo. ]

"Whoo," she said, breathing a sigh of relief and recalling the Porygon. "Good job, Alias."

The kid recalled his fainted Voltot and kicked at the ground. "Shoot," he murmured. "I'll never be ready for Professor Ivy."

Reia snapped to attention and looked at the kid curiously. "Professor Ivy?" she asked, tracing the implications of the name. She recognized it; Ivy was supposed to be the foremost Pokémon researcher of the Orange Islands. Her father was down here acting as an assitant to her for the time being. "What about Ivy?"

"Didn't you know?" the kid asked, looking up again. "Ivy and her three assistants take challenges from trainers. It's common practice that if you're swinging by Valencia, you stop in and challenge them. I hear them tough." His expression fell again. "If I can't even beat you, no way I have a chance against them..."

"Is that so?" Reia murmured. "Well, thank you for the battle."

"Yeah, yeah..."

The kid skulked off to heal his Pokémon at the front desk. Reia gave him a few minutes, then followed to do the same. She handed the nurse the Pokeballs and took off to find a place to sit down for a few minutes while waiting.

So Professor Ivy and her assistants took challenges from trainers as they came through. She might have to look into that.

But obviously not now. When Reia sent a glance out the window, she was abruptly reminded of the driving rain and winds outside. In the middle of a hurricane. And she was stuck in the Pokémon Center.

That might be for the best, though. The fight against the kid, though it had come out in her favor, had almost been disasterous. If the professor and her assistants were anything like what Reia expected, they would be much tougher. She needed to train more.

She retrieved her Pokeballs and went into another section of the Pokémon Center. She stopped before reaching the lounge, however, and dug back into her backpack, withdrawing the disk that the man had given her only a few hours before. She looked at it again and re-read the inscription; Dig. She considered for a moment, then released Pyroo.

"Hey," she said, holding up the disk. "I'm gonna try something."

Pyroo looked at her curiously, then at the disk, then back.

"This is a TM," Reia explained. "It'll teach you a new move. I think. If it's compatible. Ah, I just..."

She handed the disk to Pyroo, who took it in his paws, looked it over for a moment, and then, as though he knew instinctively how to work it, placed it against his forehead. His fur bristled for a moment, and he released a low hum from the back of his throat-- and then the disk snapped cleanly in two.

Pyroo looked up, startled, and then held up the two cracked pieces of the disk almost apologetically. Reia took them and tossed them into a nearby trash can. "Don't worry," she said. "I think that's supposed to happen. Do you feel any different?"

He nodded, but still looked apprehensive. She smiled.

"That's okay," she said. "We're both learning here."

She called Pyroo back into his Pokeball, clipped it to her belt, and moved into the lounge, her eyes raking those that were waiting until she settled upon a somewhat innocuous girl on one of the couches. Reia approached.

"Excuse me," she said, quickly checking the girl's belt to verify that yes, she was a trainer. "Do you fancy a battle?"

The girl reminded you alot of your self. Her attitude wasn't very different. And as you would soon find out her team was essentially the opposite of yours.

The girl stood up and accepted your challenge. Suggesting that the current setting wasn't appropriate though. She lead you outside to a clearing near the road next to the Pokémon center. The area wasn't particularly smooth. The ground was covered with mud, and jagged rocks stuck out from the ground randomly. Cutting through the middle of the are was a small stream.

By the looks of it she was trying to get a field which would give her team the advantage. Turning toy ou she said, "Lets start!" And tossed a pokeball in to the air.

"I had been hoping we could stay inside," Reia murmured, stepping out into the storm. It was clearing up, but probably not for long; she could see that they were still surrounded by dark clouds pouring down rain. This was probably a lull, perhaps the eye.

Well, girl wanted a fight out here, she would get a fight out here.

She sent out a Pattle. Reia considered the situation and reached for her belt, snapped off a Pokeball, and tossed it to the damp ground.

"Pipun!" she called, and as soon as the small bird burst out of the Pokeball, she called again, "Tackle!"

Deja vu, she thought.

Are you watching closely?

Pipun darted forward and dive-bombed the Pattle for a critical hit, who struck with a stream of high-pressure bubbles.

Pipun took the air and dodged through the bubbles as best it could, but was still hit as they exploded into bursts of high-pressure water. He tumbled, but beat his wings and managed to right himself.

"Good shot!" Reia called. "Go for another!"

Pattle took the tackle and shot another stream of bubbles forth but it wouldn't be nearly enough.

Pipun took another attack, but this time was prepared for it, and stayed airborn against the attack. He swooped around and, at a quick indication from Reia, folded his wings against his body and hurtled toward the Pattle one more time.

She checked her Pokedex, comparing the longevity of the two birds. Pipun was stronger, but the battle with Pattle had taken a bit out of it, leaving the Flickadee clearly superior.

Still, there was no reason that she couldn't have him stay out just for a moment and hope for the best.

"One more tackle!" she instructed.

Don't forget. By growing a level your Pipun was able to gain some more health. Allowing to stay in battle longer then you would have expected.

Perhaps a bit sturdier now, but it still felt like she was pushing her bird. Then again, Pipun was holding up better than she had anticipated, and she sent a quick glance down at her Pokedex to verify the two combatants. Satisfied, she drew the Pokeball into her hand, but did not recall Pipun, not quite yet. She would have to, though; Pipun was doing better than she thought he would, but he would not survive the full length of the battle.

"One more tackle," she instructed. "Get above and dive. Let your momentum carry you and try to skirt out of range of Flickadee!"

In her head, it made perfect sense, but whether execution would live up to her ideas...

Well. Worth a shot.

Mwahahahaha...

Pipun was faster than Flickadee (hint hint) and he flew up to score a massive critical hit on his opponent. Flickadee took the critical hit hard, but managed to hit Pipun back also. Both birds were clinging to their last breaths.

Ah, a lucky strike. Perhaps she could push this further than she had anticipated.

"Okay seriously last tackle this time," she said, resisting the urge to laugh about it. "Just hang in there, Pipun!"
