Having beaten Pattle, insuring there would not be a pursuit, Crimzon quickly went to the Pokémon Center to heal Pyroo and updated his Pokédex for the Orange Islands. He then headed down to the pier and left Tangelo Island having bought a small outboard motorboat from an old couple. Crimzon had intended to make his way along route 202 from Tangelo to Tarroco, but as he began his voyage the waves began to rise, moving swiftly southeast, in the opposite direction to the one Crimzon wanted to take. He battle valiantly against them, pushing the small engine as much as possible, but as the surface of the ocean rose and fell the boat dipped suddenly into a trough in the waves and was battered against a rock hitherto concealed underwater. Luckily the boat did not spring a leak, but the engine, more vulnerable on the outside of the boat did not fare as well. It made a loud grinding noise against the rock, then spluttered and died. Crimzon could do nothing more. The small boat was swept uncontrollably southeast, along route 201 toward Valencia Island.

Crimzon sat in the boat dejected. Today had really not been a good day. He had thought that the day he received his first pokémon would be one of the best days of his life. Instead he had been attacked by a total stranger and then washed out to sea. He could really do this some company right now, something to comfort him after what had happened, but he dared not let Pyroo out of his pokéball. After all he was a fire type and so naturally disliked water. The high waves would only terrify him.

As Crimzon sat there lonely, he slowly became aware that he was not alone out here, there was something, or someone watching him...

It was clear it was a pokémon, but Crimzon was not familiar with the type. He fumbled around in his bag and extricated his newly updated pokédex.

The pokédex's auto-identify featured kicked in moments later: Pipun, the small wing pokémon. Pipun live along sandy shores, where their coloring gives them adequate camouflage. Though capable of flight from a relatively early age, they tend to travel mostly by hopping along the sand, and build nests along large dunes.

Crimzon, naturally drawn to study pokémon, began inspecting the inquisitive little pokémon closely to take his mind off his predicament. It exhibited strange behavior, circling the boat in round-about swoops. It was almost as if it wanted something; a challenge. Crimzon could not make any sense of this, and besides he couldn't oblige, the water was too choppy to risk battling.

As time past the water slowly calmed, though the boat was still carried steadily southeast by the ocean currents. The Pipun continued to circle until finally Crimzon gave in.

"Pyroo, out you come, we have a challenger. Growl now to lower Pipun's attack."

OoC: Why did a growl attack do damage and Pyroo received none?

Pipun was startled as first at the sudden onslaught, but quickly got into its stride. However it would have been clear to any on looker that the bird was no match for the much stronger Pyroo. Cleverly though the tiny bird seemed to recognize Pyroo's aversion to the water and quickly took advantage of this. Pipun dove down close to the water, dipping one wing in and creating a thin, transparent sheet of water that drenched the boat. Pyroo recoiled, shivering, steam coming off him where the water had hit the fired up pokémon.

Crimzon was not daunted at all by the surprising show of intelligence from Pipun, knowing that Pyroo was much stronger, but they were still at a large disadvantage is terms of mobility on the water.

"Pyroo, growl attack once more while we wait for an opportunity to strike!" Crimzon directed his still shivering pokémon.

Pipun won the speed tie again and dove in for a weaker tackle than before. Pyroo, again, growled at Pipun, lowering its attack.

Pipun dove in for another tackle, but Pyroo intercepted it in midair. It struggled to hold the bird against the side of the boat and received a few hits from the struggling Pipun; however, it swiped its claws across the bird and then leaped away as quickly as it possibly could. Luckily the bird tried to pursue it no more; it was content with the few scratches it had given Pyroo in the struggle.

It didn't work this time, but you noticed that Pipun's tackles were a lot weaker than they had been before. Pyroo scratched the small bird as it tried to retreat from its attack. What's even better? Pyroo scored a critical scratch.

Pipun fell back limply after the vicious attack and lay flapping weakly in the bottom of the boat. There was still some life in it and it was bravely trying to continue the fight despite being barely conscious.

Crimzon felt sorry for the poor thing and could not bring himself to KO it. Suddenly he had an idea. He rooted through his bag and found one of the pokéballs he had purchased back in Johto in expectation of his trip. He held it in his hand awkwardly, not entirely sure how to proceed. Throwing it like they did on TV seemed a bit extreme under the circumstances. Crimzon opted for a different approach.

Crimzon called Pyroo over and handed the empty pokéball to him and indicated the wounded Pipun. Pyroo walked cautiously over to the feisty little bird and knocked the pokéball against it. The pokéball opened and the Pipun was transformed into pure energy that encapsulated itself within the pokéball. It was not quite over yet though. Would the Pipun be strong enough to escape? The pokéball rolled once, indicating the Pipun was struggling to get out. The pokéball rolled twice. The pokéball rolled a third time and...

Crimzon returned Pyroo to his ball and once again he was alone out on the ocean. He realised that he had not yet named any of his pokémon he was shocked he had forgotten something so basic, after all it was one of the standard things one did to give your pokémon a sense of individuality and to foster a greater affection and understanding between pokémon and trainer. He held both pokéballs in his hand and looked at each hard in turn. He held Pyroo's ball and whispered softly, " You shall be Nova, because you burn as hot and as bright as a star." He then looked to Pipun's. "Though I have known you only a short while I saw a glimpse of the fiery spirit that drives you when we fought. You shall be called Valor."

The pokémon caught Crimzon completely off guard. He had not seen it as it approached underneath the choppy water to come to a rest just alongside the drifting boat. The creature seemed more curious than threatening, unlike Valor's introduction, seeming perfectly content swimming along next to them.

Crimzon once more brought out his pokédex which identified the pokémon as Telaqua, a water/psychic pokémon. The combination intrigued Crimzon as psychic pokémon were known to be very intelligent and having a water pokémon would be very useful in navigating the Orange Islands. Crimzon, for the first time in his life felt what it was to be a pokémon trainer rather than an aspiring pokémon researcher, he felt the urge to capture Telaqua in order to nurture and rear it, to battle and play with it. The thoughts whizzed round his head making him feel giddy. Both his pokémon were tired, but Nova had a clear type disadvantage so Valor would have to get the job done.

"Valor, come out, we have company! Sand-Attack now, blind the foe."

Crimzon was ecstatic at his second catch of the day. Now THIS was what it was like to be a pokémon trainer. He held the ball in his hand. This one too would need a name. Let's see, he thought, Telaqua is a water/psychic type, a curious one at that. What would be appropriate? Lutra would suit nicely.

Camping Buddy Joe had tied his boat up to a small island and had pitched his tent. Crimzon slowly drifted in his direction and tied his boat up beside Joe's. They got to talking and chatted a while and Joe let Crimzon take the emergency oars from his boat and directed him toward Valencia Island where he could get the boat fixed up a bit or catch a ferry if need be.

Just as Crimzon was turning to leave, Joe called him back.

"Hey, Crimzon, before you go do you fancy humouring me and having a pokémon battle?" Joe said, releasing his Rhinolt.

Crimzon obliged, "Nova, let's show Joe what we've got. Use Scratch attack on his Rhinolt now! We're faster than him so make him work to land a hit on you."

Crimzon was elated. He had won two battle on his first day and had acquired three pokémon as well.

The battle had tired Crimzon out though and the sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, so instead of making his way to Valencia Island he decided to stay the night with Camping Buddy Joe on the small island he was camped on. They set up a campfire and Crimzon let Nova, Valor and Lutra out of their balls to enjoy the experience with him. Nova stayed close to the fire, as far away from the cold and wet as possible and seemed happy to just curl up and soak in the warmth. Lutra took to his native water, frolicking just outside the light of the fire so that all you could seem of him was a quick glint of wet fur as he surfaced, before he dove right back under again. Valor soared over head, wings uplifted by the gentle evening breeze. They were happy and content.

The next morning Crimzon woke up early and felt refreshed. He enjoyed a quick breakfast of scrambled eggs on fire toasted bread with Joe, then said his farewells and began rowing.

It was a glorious day. The sun was high and bright, its warm rays reflecting off the gently undulating waves. Crimzon made good headway through the coarse of the morning and soon Valencia Island was in view. He was not quite ready to head straight to shore though; there was still plenty of time in the day and he was having fun out on the water, perhaps he would run into some more exciting new pokémon. Just as he was thinking this he saw something in the water. He looked at it intently, but he couldn't make out if it was in the water or merely reflected off the glassy surface. whatever it was it was moving toward him.

OoC: Psywave only did 2 damage to Tackles 6? Psywave is a more powerful attack, there's no mitigating type advantages and my Telaqua is higher level... Telaqua's s.atk is a lot higher than Pipun's atk, as is its defense versus Pipun's s.defense so even were levels and attacks of equal power Telaqua would still win out. If I assume that Pipun's attack was a critical hit I would still think Psywave would do more than 2 damage.

"Lutra, use charm."

Psywave does damage between .5 to 1.5x the level

OOC: Sorry I am new to the psywave fact. Fixed it. Also Pipun hit 6 and doesn't crit it.

Your charm hit the pipun as he countered you with a tackle.
