Hi, some of you have probably seen my art on dA or Topaz but I felt I needed to post it here because frankly, I've kind of stagnated and would like some comments for how to improve. Since there are lots of people and artists here, I was hoping on getting some good old C&C. General tips are slightly more appreciated than details on how to change specific pieces, because some of them I merged all the layers for some reason or another and can't change them any more.

So, let's begin!

This is Topaz's Traplent. It wants to eat you with its gaping maw. Also I find it's the only time I really managed to use highlights (how do they work? I still don't get them!) I'm probably most proud of this one. Probably.

Oh man a non-Topaz one. Phoenixsong hosted a really cool "do an overdone fakemon concept except cooler" contest and this was my submission. It was inspiring enough a concept that I ended up finishing it early, then had my nerves wracked by two months of extended deadlines and some really superb submissions.

Oh wow another non-Topaz one! There's actually a bit of story behind this one. I was helping to host this event at my school called "Cafe Blanc" with music and food. Our publicity team was rather inexperienced at Photoshop to say the least and so I made this for them. It promptly was downloaded by everyone BUT the publicity team and didn't end up on any ads. Luckily however, one of the auditions team members decided to make the menu (she's really good at Photoshop) and thus bunny was immortalized.

These were my two attempts at Jirachi, the second one being better by far IMO. I don't know why I made the wings so big on the second, I probably got too carried away with the fabric. Fabric is fun to draw! With the first I experimented with using Sharpie to outline instead of a mouse. No dice.

This is Topaz's Fincherp. It is sadly extraordinarily generic looking.

Here's my most recent one, Topaz's Ampure.

-------------------------------------------

I also have some non-digital art ones, which are generally made for other people (I have this nasty habit of making people's birthday cards instead of buying from Hallmark.) I won't post the image up but the links are there:
OBJECTION!
OBJECTION! Cont'd
Mion, made for DSQ
Rain, made for RuinQueenofOblivion
Dusk, a card submitted to a contest on UR
A peculiarly geared Venonat
Even more traditional:
Robin
Turtle

So, comments?

Well, that was a total failure. I guess it's time to initiate operation "crank out OImon art until someone responds".

Well, here's Boom'rang with added motion blur:

You can relate to me because I'm racially ambiguous.

Something about the wing that's holding the boomerang doesn't really click. I know that wings aren't anatomically supposed to be able to do things like hold leek boomerangs, but the free wing-hand looks far superior to the one holding the boomerang. I think it may have something to do with how the top feather-finger on the free wing is shorter than the rest, but on the weapon wing they're all the same length.

Then again, I know nothing of anatomy, so feel free to ignore me.

I like it! It reminds me quite a bit of The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker. I do agree with Noir about the one wing, though; it does look kind of awkward. Good job though!

I kind of see what you're saying. It's difficult to imagine how exactly Boom'rang would throw and hold its leeks, no? The free wing I ended up using my hand as a reference for what it would look like after throwing something, so it's a little funny that it seems to be more correct, but I guess it is.

Thanks for the comments!

Are you watching closely?

These look really great, IB, I really like all of them! There are only a few general comments I can really offer.

On Jirachi, the yellow shades seem a bit too close in color, I would go for a bit more contrast. Yellow is a pain to work with I've found, I'm not sure why, heh.

For highlights, like on Traplant's leaves and the ant's eyelids and nose, I would try to blend and taper the edges a bit more with the base color, that might help. The shadow colors could be blended a bit more in some areas, such as the dark parts of Traplant's leaf collar, as well.

In some areas, you could try adding a bit more detail with highlights and shadows. The biggest example of yours I can think of would be Ampure's tail, to make it look furrier (Ampure is absolutely adorabe, by the way!)

Overall, your lineart is nice and smooth, there's just a few place, like the bunny's back, where it gets a bit more bumpy. Messing around with line thickness (as I can see you've already done) should help you figure out what style works with the shading and style that you're going for with your picture; I'd suggest thinner lines for more detailed/'realistic' looking pictures. You can also try to taper the edges of black lines within the picture, for instance Traplant's and the ant's snouts/noses, if you've still got the outline as a separate layer, just take a smaller eraser tool and erase bits of the edges.

Texturing the shading! That's genius: I had so much fun making the fabric on Jirachi, it could be great making fur, and all sorts of other stuff by playing with the shades.

Thanks so much Novoni! That's a great place to move on.

As for the tapering, I'll keep that in mind as well. I think it occurred to me a few times and I did it, but I keep on forgetting.
