Finally out of Valencia.

And with that, the overly masculine trainer's Ponyta fell to a cloud of bubbles, of all things. The crowd applauded yet another victory.

Voices started calling out, trying their hand at challenging Zenith. Unfortunately, he would have to disappoint them.

"Guys, guys, we've had enough. I need to get them some rest. Uh..." He pointed in two random directions. "You and you can start." As what he assumed were two other trainers entered the makeshift ring, Zenith made his way through the crowd, and headed back down the street.

His team needed some rest, and so did he. Hopefully it wouldn't be too hard to get a room.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TWO DAYS LATER

-Supplies-

"Okay, this'll be good if any emergencies come up." Zenith carefully placed the medicine he just bought into his backpack. Having a way of healing his team would help, even if he wasn't planning on leaving Valencia just yet. He still had a challenge to pass, after all.

Taking a day off from training had helped Peregrine and the still unnamed Pattle recover. But they weren't ready just yet. A warmup battle was all they really needed.

As Zenith left the store, he heard a voice. "Hey, wait!" Another trainer ran across the street to him.

-!-

"Uh...gimme a minute, I gotta take this." The trainer reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and answered it.
Quote:

OoC: Get it? The "encounter" theme was his ringtone. >_>

"Yeah? ...Yes...I get it, been with you for years...really good IVs, you already told me...alright, look, you still gotta train the rest of your team. What if you go up against something your Raticate can't handle? ...Yes, I'm serious. Okay. Fine, bye."

He put his phone away again. "Sorry about that. Uh...anyway, you could battle me?"

Exactly what Zenith needed. "Sure, my Pokémon need a little more experience, themselves."

"Wait...we shouldn't do this in the middle of a crowded street. Uh...to the square?"

"Meh, sure, why not?"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The two found a quiet section of the town square. It wouldn't be hard to keep a low level battle under control there.

"Ready?" "Bring it."

-Trainer Battle-

"Flickadee, you lead!" The trainer's first Pokémon emerged in front of him.

"Okay then, Peregrine, start this off!" Zenith released his Pipun. He was starting to get used to having Peregrine lead.

"You know what to do." Peregrine charged full force at his next opponent.

Peregrine emerged and flitted in front of the enemy Flickadee, sizing him up before folding his wings and diving, ramming into the white bird and knocking them both through the air. It was a very effective blow, slamming it clean out of the sky and into the ground, and Flickadee had to take a few seconds to clear its head from the impact. But it did, and it rose up, turning face Pipun and taking to the sky for its own tackle-- woefully weak in comparison to Peregrine's critical blow.

Peregrine had struck hard again. He was getting really good at tackling. Not having any other attack options would do that.

The Pipun was already preparing to charge at the the badly wounded Flickadee. At this point, he didn't even need the command.

Peregrine almost seems bloodthirsty, no?

Anyhow, Peregrine, being accustomed to doing nothing but tackling, dove into Flickadee's left side, causing the little pink bird to fall to the ground again. This time, it did not get up. The trainer recalled his pink bird and released a small rabbit on skis. An odd Pokémon. Don't you agree?

"Ooh...that didn't go well." Zenith's opponent recalled the Flickadee. "Okay, let's see what Lepski can do."

With another flash of light, he released a creature Zenith hadn't seen before. It looked...similar to a Buneary, but with an ice blue coat and darker blue on parts of its hands and ears breaking up the monotony. Interestingly, ice covered its feet in a way that resembled skis. But what could it use?

That wouldn't be hard to figure out. Zenith already had his 'Dex out, ready to scan.

"Wait...gimme a second, here...so that's a Lepski? Ice, but doesn't have any Ice moves yet. Apparently, they're pretty rare. How'd you get one around here?"

"My birthday was yesterday. Got him as a promo."

"Oh, yeah. Heard about that."

The trainers' minds turned back to the battle. "Stay in for now, Peregrine. Tackle it."

Peregine was, of course, more experienced than Lepski; the little rabbit was rather small, after all, and didn't have a handle over its innate icy powers. It was little surprise that your possibly psycho bird was managing to pound it flat.

OoC: I know. I plan on writing her and the raffle in after the fight.

Two down, one to go. This was looking good.

Zenith's opponent, on the other hand, didn't. Was he that sure he was going to lose? As he unveiled his last Pokeball, all he could say was "Well, here goes nothing." A flash of white light revealed a Pyroo...a Fire type weak to Pattle's Water attacks.

Wait...didn't Zenith see someone with a Pyroo a couple days earlier? "Hey, I ran into you the other day, didn't I? Asked you something?"

"Oh, yeah. Wow, uh...long time no see." The trainer shrugged a little. "Just get this over with."

"Well, if you insist."

Zenith turned his attention toward Pattle. "Bubble. He's weak to it."

The Pyroo was outmatched. The other trainer's worries were justified. He couldn't win this now.

Pattle, seeing how much damage his attack did, was readying another volley without even needing the order.

I thought I hinted to it pretty well. Too subtle?

Somehow, the Pyroo survived. It didn't matter much. Not even a miracle would stop a victory now.

Zenith said sympathetically to the other trainer "No hard feelings." He couldn't help but feel a little sorry for sweeping him like this. But this was a battle. Couldn't afford to be too emotional. He issued the command for a final strike. "Bubble. End this."

"Wow. I was pretty outmatched, huh?" The other trainer seemed to be taking his defeat pretty well. "Guess it was just bad luck running into someone more experienced than me."

"Yeah. You weren't that bad, though, considering. But you might want to find something to cover the weakness to Rock types your entire team has."

"Good point. I need a Grass type..."

"Wait, what's your name, anyway? Maybe we can have a rematch some time."

"It isn't my real name, but I usually go by Severin. Used it online a couple times, and..."

"Heh. I've been doing the same thing. Call me Zenith."

The two trainers exchanged phone numbers. It was always nice to have someone in a similar position to be able to call, and they could set up a rematch that way.
Quote:

OoC: With Severin, I tried to show another trainer with a good head on his shoulders. He may or may not be a reoccurring character.
And I just kind of pulled his name out of nowhere. It sounded cool. >_>

The two were about to keep the conversation going when several younger trainers ran by. They turned to find a large congregation in one corner of the town square.

-Gathering-

Zenith and Severin exchanged confused looks, then walked over to where the crowd had gathered. Zenith managed to get the attention of one of the trainers nearby, and asked "What's up with all of these people?"

The trainer, a girl that looked around sixteen, replied. "You haven't heard yet? Amaya opened their League!"

Amaya...where was that again? Zenith had heard the name before, but couldn't remember exactly where...

Wait, that was it. Amaya was a country to the southwest, across the ocean. He remembered spending about a week on it in a geography class a couple years back. He heard they were trying to get their own League going once, but didn't realize how far along they had been.

"...giving away...are you even listening?"

"Uh, sorry." Zenith was so lost in thought he forgot the girl was speaking. "Could you repeat that last part?"

"Well, they're giving away some Pokémon native to Amaya to amateur trainers, and I guess people found out."

"Oh, uh...thanks for the info."

Zenith slowly made his way through the crowd, and after a good couple of minutes, got to the front. He found a woman--the same one as a couple days ago; the same adoption group was running this--having people fill out forms, large, transparent containers filled with Poke Balls, and four enclosures, each of them containing a Pokémon Zenith didn't recognize.

He asked another trainer. "So they're giving those away?" he said, motioning toward where the 'mons were being kept.

"Yeah, they're letting everyone take one of them. You might wanna make it fast; I think they're running out."

With that, Zenith quickly made his way over to where four Amayan Pokémon were being held. Papers were heavily taped to the side of the enclosures, showing each of the Pokémon's names, a brief description, their battle statistics, and what techniques they could learn. Within the makeshift fences were one of each species they were giving away.

They seemed pretty unremarkable, at first glance. A Fire-type that looked a little like a small Ursaring, but unfortunately had a narrow movepool. A mechanical being, apparently Fire/Steel, that was nervously rolling around its enclosure. A Psychic type that evolved when it leveled up while equipped with an item Zenith had never even heard of. A sickly purple-and-green beast with the fitting, but unfortunate, pure Poison typing.

The last one seemed mediocre as well, at first. A bipedal creature with a grayish-blue hide and rock-hard plate on its head that made it look like a cross between an Aggron and a Bastiodon. A look into its battling potential revealed something a little more promising. It was pure Rock...not the best typing. However, it had great Attack, good mixed defenses, and an ability that made it immune to recoil damage. The moves it could learn gave it the means to take advantage of Rock Head, culminating in the incredibly strong Head Smash. This one seemed worth getting.

Zenith wrote down the Pokémon's movepool into his Dex--being able to do that really helped when you needed to remember things about Pokémon that weren't native to the region--and headed back to the receptionist.

She recognized him. "Hey, I remember you. You're the one that missed out on..."

"Yeah. I guess my luck's looking up now. I'll take a..." He checked the information he wrote, making sure he got the name right. "...Tricetra."

"Okay, just fill this out, and I'll need 500P. For services. We need to stay running somehow." Zenith handed her the money, and she gave him a paper to fill out. It wasn't much, just confirming trainer status, knowledge of what he was doing, and a legal promise to care for the Pokémon he adopted. "Okay, and..." She reached into the container on her side labeled "Tricetra" and handed him a Poke Ball. "...Here you are. Good luck!"

"Thanks."

A third team member. Things were looking up. Zenith released his new Pokémon. The Tricetra yawned, and stretched its legs. It must have been in suspended animation for a while.

Zenith tried to think of what to say. "Uh...hey. So I guess I'm looking after you now." He patted the Rock type's head a little. "But what am I going to call you? What gender are you, anyway?"

He was interrupted by yet another trainer. "She's female. They're a little bigger than the males. See?" He gestured toward his own, apparently male Tricetra.

"Ah. So what kind of name...got it. Corundra? That sound good?" The triceratops seemed lost in thought for a second, then looked at Zenith and nodded. Interesting, how she knew what that action meant.

"Okay then. It's a pretty good name, isn't it?"
Quote:

OoC: I named her after the mineral Corundum, one of the hardest minerals on earth. It's a 9/10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.

The surprisingly heartfelt meeting was unceremoniously ended by a good amount of the crowd running away, some screaming.

-Tricksters-

Zenith tried to find what they were running from, and saw a decently sized group of Ghost Pokémon wandering around the square, scaring people, knocking over objects, stealing things, and causing general mischief. And a couple of them were headed straight for him!

Two Pokémon came at you - a flying paper lantern of sorts and a balloon-shaped companion. The purple balloon-ish Pokémon drifted off elsewhere to harass some little girl who'd not only been scared out of her mind by the sudden breach in reality, but also ironically had let go of a balloon in the process - this would undoubtedly be interesting to watch, but the other one seemed intent on keeping you from watching or intervening, throwing a relatively small ball of flame at your feet to get your attention - scorching your shoes. Is it time to make it pay?

Zenith could just make out the two figures headed toward him. One of them was a creature he didn't recognize, a Pokémon that seemed to resemble a paper lantern. The other was...wait, where did the other one go? A sudden shout of "Hey!" revealed that the Drifloon was tormenting a little girl. Zenith was ready to step in...but the lantern ghost sent a small flame his way that regained his attention. What was it, anyway?

Well, he could find that out.

"A Phantern...Ghost/Fire, pretty rare typing...stats are decent enough, but that movepool leaves something to be dewhaAH!"

While Zenith was busy checking his Dex, the Phantern was busy giving him a hotfoot. The ghost cackled in amusement as Zenith frantically put out the fire.

He was pissed now. "Real funny. Don't think I'm gonna let you get away with that."

-Ghostbusting-

"Okay, let's see how...what the WAIT!" Zenith had forgotten that Corundra was still there, and she was heading straight for the Phantern! "Don't attack...it's...screw it." He hastily recalled the apparently inexperienced Tricetra, and had Pattle take her place. "It's part Fire! Bubble!" But the ghost was already attacking. Hopefully Pattle would be able to counterattack.
Quote:

OoC: Okay, hopefully this will work. Corundra starts, then switches out for Pattle. The next turn, Pattle uses Bubble. The Phantern attacks twice. I don't know for sure if this is legal, but I swear I saw a couple people combine their first two turns when they switched their lead before.

Fortunately for you, Phantern likes fire enough to even try and use Ember on a water type. Or it just doesn't know better.

Too late. Pattle took a burst of flame to the face as wasn't able to react in time. Fortunately, it didn't affect him much. It was a good thing the Phantern didn't realize Ember would hurt so little...most wildlife didn't know better.

This was still winnable. "Easy, shake it off. Bubble it before it gets another chance to strike."

Another attempt to Astonish, and this one was somewhat closer to being a success. Phantern brought up the economy in a web chat environment, which would have scared away most - but Pattle merely gulped and pushed past it, nearly finishing Phantern off with a barrage of bubbles.

Pattle looked badly hurt. The Phantern looked worse. Neither of them would be able to last much longer. But all Zenith needed was one more attack.

"Just...hang in there! Bubble it one more time!"

They needed to knock out this thing fast...more of the ghosts were closing in.

And Bubble ended the poor Phantern's unlife. As it vanished, however, a smaller ghost slithered up, ready to take it's shot at you next.
Pattle gained 40% EXP.

OoC:Corundra participated, so she needs exp. She technically counts as traded, so she also gets a boost.

The lantern ghost faded out of existence. Was it dead, unconscious, or just playing around?

There wasn't any time to contemplate it. Another ghost was heading Zenith's way...a serpentine figure partially covered in bandages.

"A...Spirik. Uh oh, Hypnosis...shoulda bought some Awakenings...but Constrict is really weak..."

He looked up to make sure the Pokémon wasn't trying anything sneaky like the Phantern did. Surprisingly, the Spirik was coiled up a few feet away, as if waiting for an opponent.

Pattle was a little too banged up from the Phantern to continue fighting...fortunately, there was another option.

Zenith released Peregrine from his Pokeball. The Pipun looked around in confusion for a second, then caught the gaze of the Spirik facing him. In an instant, he recognized his opponent, and chirped as threateningly as he could.

"It's a Ghost type, so tackling it won't work. But you should be able to use Gust now. Understand?"

Peregrine hesitated, then flapped his wings at a surprising speed, sending a burst of wind at the Spirik.

The Spirik was caught off guard with the gust of wind, and tried to respond by hypnotizing Peregrine to sleep. Fortunately, the bird noticed quickly enough to look away.

The Spirik was readying another attack...only to suddenly lose its focus. Another trainer had his Machop Foresight it. He was able to get out "Should be easier now that it can't phase through attacks!" before a Misdreavus took his attention away again.

"Wait...Tackle should hurt it now," was all Peregrine needed to hear.

"Waitdon'tlookat..."

Too late. Peregrine's overconfidence made it all too easy to be hypnotized to sleep. He was out like a light.

"Dammit." Now what? There went Zenith's best option. An Awakening or two would really help here, but how was he supposed to know this would happen?

Hmm...only Level 6...maybe...

"Corundra, you're up again!" The Tricetra materialized before her opponent, but turned toward her trainer in confusion.

"Okay, hopefully you understand me. You normally can't hit Ghost types with non elemental attacks, but someone else used a move that made it vulnerable to them. So Tackle, but only because it'll work this time. Got it?"

Corundra slowly turned back around, then broke off in a run at the Spirik. She got the idea.

INSERT WITTY PHRASE HERE!

Spirik moved forward to strike at Peregrine and wrapped its ethereal body around her foe-- only to find that she was attacking the small triceratops instead of the bird. And the triceratops was still in good condition. Very good condition.

A blow from her skull sent Spirik sprawling on the ground, dazed.

Wait, Thief? Did it just use that? Zenith didn't see that in the Dex's moveset entry.

Something seemed up...but first he needed to take care of his current opponent while it was on the ropes. He directed Corundra to tackle the Spirik one last time.

OoC: Corundra had 60% exp from the Phantern, which wasn't counted at first. She should be Level 6 at 5% now.

"Not bad." Corundra had her first victory. But with still more ghosts flying around, now wasn't the time to celebrate.

A younger trainer rushed by, stopped to spray Corundra with a potion, and was able to say "Gotta keep everyone healed!" before running away. Zenith turned, ready to thank him...and tripped.

Grumbling, he got back to his feet, to find a small imp-like creature laughing at him.

"A Sableye? Lemme guess...you did that. Think you're funny?" Zenith released Peregrine, who shot his next victim an unamused glance. "He doesn't."

Peregrine, surprisingly, didn't rush at the Sableye. Was he aware that tackling her wouldn't do anything? Was he actually waiting for a command?

"Gust. Go ahead. At least until someone Foresights the thing."

OOC: I totally remember fixing that. Anyway, Tricetra learned Horn Attack.

Peregrine whipped up a strong breeze, sending small debris at the gem-eyed Imp that wasn't trying to play tricks on you. It was trying to steal your corporeal body so that the souls of the underworld would have fleshly bodies to help them conquer the world. Silly trainers.

For some reason the imp tried to steal Peregrine's feathers. They aren't gold or silver. Silly unintelligent Pokémon.

Now this one used Thief. What was going on? It was a good thing he hadn't bought any equippable items.

Peregrine's level advantage was really helping him here...so was his battle sense. He was readying another Gust without needing the command.

Another Gust. Another pointless attempt at thievery. It was probably just trying to take advantage of being part Dark.

The Sableye looked badly wounded. Another hit would probably knock her out. And Peregrine was readying another burst of wind.

Zenith wasn't going to stop him.

Another ghost taken out of comission. Their numbers seemed to be dwindling, but they were still causing trouble.

A sinister laugh caught Zenith off guard. Turning around, he found a Gastly staring at him with a surprisingly malevolent look on its face. The two exchanged glances for a couple seconds until a burst of light from a Felare drew its attention away.

Another ghost flew into Zenith's view another Phantern. There didn't seem to be very many rare ghosts in this swarm. Oh well, it was still battle experience.

"Pattle, you take this one." The Water-type materialized before the Phantern. "Bubble."
