Fortunately, Pattle didn't look too fazed. And the Phantern took another attack full on. The ghosts' numbers were starting to thin. Zenith and the other trainers were starting to keep them under control. This wouldn't be lasting much longer. Still, he needed to focus on his current opponent. He gave Pattle the command to send another Bubble attack at the Phantern. |

Hm. Seems somebody didn't add damage from Ember last time. Not that it's particularly effective anyway; the fire lantern tried another burst of flame, but it was a rather pathetic attempt, leaving some minor char marks on Pattle's fur-- not very much compared to the devastating burst of bubbles. Devastating burst of bubbles. Yes. [9] 26/34 [-1 accuracy to Bubble only] [Torrent][7] 3/33 [Levitate]

I like the sound of a devastating burst of bubbles that cause a massive explosion that cause cataclysmic fading of an incorporeal lantern's embers, having the same effect as shooting it in the forehead with an energy weapon. Or at least that's what I've been told by Neo. Pattle gained 30 EXP. AW MAN! I WAS ON A CREATIVE KICK AND YOU WENT AND HAD TO INTERRUPT IT, DIDN'T YOU!? DIDN'T YOU!? Heh, I'm kidding. Another stream of bubbles knocked out the Phantern. The ghosts' forces were thinning now. It was only a matter of time before their ill-natured fun was going to end. A sudden, brilliant light ended it even earlier, sending any remaining ghosts running or floating away, and badly injuring any other Pokémon, both enemies and allies. The trainers in the area, Zenith included, turned to the apparent source of the light: a small group in one corner of the square, dressed in robes of pure white with trim of yellow and ice blue. -Aurora Hymn- Three of them stepped forward, and began to speak. "AND THE BRINGERS OF LIGHT HAVE VANQUISHED THE FOUL CREATURES OF DARKNESS!" "You're welcome." "Laying it on a little thick, guys." The trainers that still remained in the square were mostly...confused. A couple motioned toward the strange men. The three cut through the silence again. "WHAT? HAVE YOU NOT HEARD OF THE GREATNESS OF AURORA?" shouted the predictably taller and more muscular of them. "I DOUBT YOU ARE EVEN WORTHY OF THIS DEED!" The trainer to his left replied under his breath, hand dumbfoundedly covering his face. "You're not helping, you're just gonna drive them away like..." The third interrupted. "Consider this a gratitude from the holy order of Team Aurora. You may thank us as you please." More silence. "Typical. Looking a gift horse in the mouth. You newbies never understand how things go around here." "SEE HOW YOU FEEL WHEN YOUR SITUATION IS DIRE AGAIN, AND WE REFUSE TO COME TO YOUR AID!" "You'll be sorry." "Why do I work with these guys..." The three rejoined the other Aurora members, and the group left the square. The trainers that remained conversed among themselves, trying to understand what had just happened over the last hour. Why did all of those ghosts appear in one place? Who were those robed trainers, and why did they boast about saving them when all they did was land the finishing blow? Zenith had to excuse himself...he was getting tired, and there was something important he had to do the next day. A quick call postponed his battle with the Triplets of Valencia to the following morning. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -Preparation- "Okay, this is our biggest fight so far. You guys...and girl...ready for this?" Zenith and his three team members were huddled up in the reception room of Valencia Labs, discussing strategy for the three matches ahead. "Corundra, I know you're new to this, but you're learning fast." The Tricetra seemed to smile a little. "Your front horn should be durable enough to attack with now, so focus on using that instead of your body weight. It'll be stronger. Peregrine, you're really picking up on this stuff. Just keep fighting out there, but be ready for me to give you directions. Pattle...I may not have a name for you still, but you're just as important as the others." "Um, excuse me...Zenith, right?" "Wha...oh, sorry." He hadn't noticed the receptionist walking up to him. "Just a pep talk." "No, don't worry about that. You're up. Good luck." "Thanks." His Pokémon back in stasis, Zenith followed the receptionist through a couple hallways, and was led through a set of double doors. A large, open-air enclosure awaited him, containing a regulation-size arena and a few (currently empty) bleachers for others to watch. He didn't have long to take in the sights before another voice took him by surprise. "Prepare yourself, trainer!" If this was the first of the Triplets, it wasn't what he was expecting. Was it the bright red hair? Was it the badly ripped up lab coat? Or maybe it was the flame tattoo running down her right arm... "I am Minami, the first of your three opponents! We shall see if you have what it takes to make it in the Orange Islands League!" -Triple Challenge- Minami hurled a Pokeball onto the field with considerable strength, and it opened in a flash of brilliant light, revealing...a Fluffoon. Zenith was almost in disbelief. Something as non-threatening as this wasn't what he was expecting at all. Minami seemed to notice. "Don't you dare laugh! I'm using these as part of the trial! Besides, looks can be deceiving!" She had a point. Zenith remembered how much tougher Ella's Fluffoon had been than he first thought. After all, Normal types like it got STAB off of the most basic of attacks... Wait...Normal...what moves did it have? A quick Dex scan revealed that the Level 7 Fluffoon indeed only had non-elemental attacks. And he had something that resisted them. "Corundra..." A flip of the Tricetra's Pokeball later, she appeared in the battle. "You resist everything this thing throws at you. Don't worry, react to his movements, and strike back with your horn."

Minami predictably ordered a Quick Attack, which glanced off of Corundra without much damage done. Corundra was able to take advantage of her opponent remaining close to her, countering with a quick stab of her horn. This seemed...surprisingly easy. Or was he just this prepared? That ghost swarm really gave his team a lot of battle experience in a short time. "Easy...another one." Corundra needed to take this one down fast before she took too much damage. |

Another glancing hit by the Fluffoon, another powerful counterattack by Corundra. Fluffoon gave it his all, going in for a final charge against Tricetra, but it was little use as Tricetra charged again, caught Fluffoon under the chest, and tossed him. He landed on the ground a few feet away, unconscious, and disappeared in a flare of light as he was recalled by his trainer. [6] 14/26 [Rock Head] @noneTricetra gains a boosted 135% experience! As expected, the two exchanged blows one last time...and the Fluffoon fell, recalled by his trainer. Minami didn't seem angry, but she still sounded as fiery as ever. "All right, let's see what you do against THIS!" Another flash of brilliant light revealed...a...what was that? Zenith reached for his Pokedex, but was interrupted by Minami. "Marmunk. Normal type, bulky, really common around here." "Ah." She had pretty much read his mind. "In that case...Corundra, stay in. Just do the same thing. It'll be a little harder to take down, but it probably won't hit as hard. Just hold your ground and strike back."

Corundra stood in place, ready to take another attack. The Marmunk rushed forward, ready to slam into her with all his might. But suddenly, the Normal-type's feet gave way, sending him to the ground with all momentum lost. Corundra, although surprised, struck back anyway, taking advantage of the whiffed attack. "Heh. Nice." Zenith was surprised himself. A little luck helped out a lot at lower levels. Minami wasn't as amused. She managed to muster out a "Whoa...didn't see that coming." Despite lowering her voice, she seemed to be taking it well enough. Her Marmunk scrambled back to its feet, ready to try again. Corundra was ready to counter it again. |

Another exchange of blows, and the two combatants were starting to wear down. Minami couldn't stay quiet any longer, and shouted "Come on! You can finish this! Tackle the thing harder!" The two combatants lay on the ground, barely conscious. They clearly couldn't take much more. Was leaving Corundra in like this a good idea? Almost as if answering, the Tricetra slowly got back to her feet. As her opponent followed suit, she took a defensive position. Apparently, she was confident enough that she could take one more hit. Corundra took a tackle straight on...then struck back with a jab of her horn that knocked out her aggressor. Minami seemed to take it well. "Hey, not bad! You have some potential. But...the others will be the judge of that. You'll be directed to a healing station, so make sure you're ready for Round 2!" A quick heal later, Zenith's team was prepared. The figure that entered the training area next was similar to Minami, yet...different, as cliched as it sounds. Her hair was relatively short, straight, and jet black. She appeared to be dressed more neatly, and her clothes all seemed to be some shade of blue, covered with a pale blue version of the lab coats that biologists always seemed to wear. As she spoke, her voice seemed more calm and restrained, as well. "So...you beat my sister. I am Tsunami, the second of three. You'll find me to be a bit more of a challenge than Minami was. Well...let's start this." Tsunami unveiled a Poke Ball, and released her first Pokémon...a Koaleaf. "I imagine you recognize him?" Fortunately, Zenith did. "Yeah, I've seen a lot of them around. Which means..." He held out a Poke Ball of his own. "...I know how to deal with them." A flash of light brought Peregrine into the field. He took a quick circle of the area, sizing up his opponent, before landing in front of his trainer and glaring at the Koaleaf. "It's a Grass type. Get ready to blow it away." Peregrine understood well enough to ready a Gust attack. |

Was the Koaleaf unprepared? Did Peregrine's attack hit a weak spot? Or was he just getting that strong? Either way, Peregrine's opening attack had sent his opponent a clear twenty feet back and into a wall! "Whoa" was all Tsunami was able to get out at first. Even she was caught off guard. "That power, from...hm..." Unfortunately, Peregrine let it get to his head a little...letting the Koaleaf get in a counterattack. Fortunately, it wasn't a very strong one. Brought back to reality, the Pipun glided back out of range, steadied himself again, and sent another gust of wind across the field. Edited by Zenith, Nov 30 2010, 08:03 PM.

Another Gust struck true, rendering the Koaleaf unconscious before it could do anything of value. "Rrr...hmm..." Tsunami stifled a shout. "Impressive. So..." She unveiled another Poke Ball. "Are you as prepared for this one?" A brilliant burst of light revealed...a Pattle. Well, Zenith didn't see that coming. But on the other hand, there wasn't anything stopping... Remarking "Okay, Peregrine, you've done enough damage", he recalled the Pipun for the moment. "Heh. Up for a little mirror match?" Another burst of light later, his own Pattle was in the arena. Tsunami seemed...uncharacteristically confused. "What exactly are you doing? They're the same level and everything. Relying on luck? Hoping for a critical hit? Unless..." Zenith didn't respond. Instead, he gave his own Pattle a command. "Bubble won't help us here. Ready?" The Water-type nodded confidently. "Pound." |

"..." "Whoa..." Tsunami stood in disbelief. Zenith stood in amazement. His Pattle had intercepted his opponent's attack, and countered with a second critical hit. Seeing that Tsunami's Pattle was barely hanging on, Zenith remarked, "Looks like we won't need to use one after all." He pointed toward his own Pokémon and said confidently, "We need one more. Finish this." Edited by Zenith, Dec 2 2010, 06:05 PM.

And with that, Tsunami's Pattle fell. "Impressive. You seem to know what you're doing. But try not to rely on lucky hits, like the ones you got here." "Oh, those? Ha. I was gonna use a Potion, but then I, uh, didn't need to." "Hmm...insightful. You know, you'd be surprised how few people use those in this. We don't have a rule stopping trainers from doing that, but they don't seem to figure it out. ...But I digress. Heal your team, and your third challenger will await you." Another trip to the healing machine down the hall later, Zenith was ready for the final part of the test. The young woman that walked into the arena looked rather unremarkable. Her medium-length brown hair was parted pretty normally, making her green eyes and average looks contrast very little with her regular white lab coat. Her voice was pretty normal too. "Ah, so you're the one that beat my sisters? Can't say you don't look like you have what it takes. Then again, you are a little older than most..." "Yeah...don't remind me." "Call me Konami. Well, the rules will be the same for me as the other two. Just be ready for whatever happens." She took a Poke Ball out of a pocket on the side of her coat. "Begin." She lobbed the red and white capsule forward, and it opened, revealing a creature Zenith hadn't seen before. He instinctively reached for his 'Dex, saying "Could you give me a second?" "Sure, take your time." "Okay...so that's a Psibian. Grass/Psychic, not a very common typing...pretty bulky...but limited on moves at this level. In that case...I can handle this easily." A couple seconds later, Peregrine was once again on the field. Konami wasn't too surprised. "A Pipun...probably caught on Route 201, am I correct?" "Yeah, but he's had some training." Zenith directed his attention to Peregrine. "That's part Grass. Understand?" The bird reacted by holding his wings out, ready to unleash a gust of wind. He understood. Perergrine's attack struck hard despite the Psibian's defenses. The frog responded by leaping forward and striking Peregrine with a fast but weak punch. Peregrine glared at his aggressor. Apparently, he wasn't going to take that. He decided to respond with another Gust...no command necessary. ...Which was fortunate for Zenith. He was starting to feel a little tired, thanks to this marathon session of fights. |

Another round, more damage, and it looked like Peregrine only needed one more attack. But why did Zenith start feeling a little tired all of a sudden? "Uh...can I sit down, or something?" Konami unflinchingly replied "Unfortunately, no. This is as much of a test of your endurance as it is your team's. Just try to hang in there." Fine. This couldn't last too much longer. He could rest afterward. "Uh...Peregrine, one more should do it." |

And Psibian fell. Peregrine just kept getting stronger. Konami seemed unimpressed. "That's one." Then again, people must pass this challenge all the time. Unsurprisingly, she had another Poke Ball in hand. A wave of radiant light flooded the immediate area, and still lingered for a few seconds as a figure emerged from it...another one Zenith didn't recognize...but he could figure it out. "Uh, could you give me another second?" he said as he scanned the creature. "A Solafly...Bug/Fire, typical three-form Bug type. This one's Level 10, and...wait, yours looks different." "Unusual specimen, this one. Alternate coloring makes him extremely rare." "Oh, so it's a shiny one...makes sense." As the two were making small talk, Peregrine had been staring menacingly at what he assumed was his next opponent. Unfortunately, he had to be disappointed. "You've done enough for now," Zenith said as he recalled the Pipun. "Someone else needs some experience." In his place appeared the still unnamed Pattle, who seemed a little fatigued but ready. "You must be as worn out as me. Let's get this over with. Ready? Bubble." |

Konami's Solafly led by predictably blowing a small flame at Pattle. Low level Fire types and Ember always seemed to go hand in hand, after all. Unfortunately for the bug, it was dealing with a Water type that not only took the Ember well, but sent back a spray of bubbles that hurt surprisingly much. Konami, once again, didn't seem surprised. Was is the fact that she's probably seen this many times before, or was she just this stoic? Now wasn't the best time to figure that out...this battle wasn't over yet. Zenith regained his composure and order another Bubble attack. |

Konami's Solafly was on its last legs. From what it looked, one more hit would knock it out. Pattle was ready to land the finishing blow...but there was someone else that also needed some battle experience. "Sorry about this...," Zenith said as he recalled the Water-type. "But Corundra needs to catch up a little." Yet another burst of light signaled her entry into the battle. Unfortunately, the Solafly was already preparing another attack, and was headed straight for the still disoriented Tricetra! Hopefully, she would think fast enough to counterattack.

Corundra took an Ember head on...and her battle knowledge led her to counter back, sending Konami's Solafly to the ground, unconscious. -Triple Victory- As Konami recalled her Pokémon, she seemed impressed. "Well done. You've proved your skill well enough. In a minute, an intern will be coming out here to give you your reward. The scientist took out a cell phone and called...someone. "Yeah. Yeah, someone passed...I know, been a couple days. ...Wait, what? He's out today? Sick? Wait, so...you're coming out here yourself? Sure you have enough time to...okay, okay. Fine." She turned her attention to Zenith. "Good news. Professor Ivy's coming out here herself to congratulate you. Doesn't usually happen this way, so just go with it." Wait, she was the one that helped him way back...wow, it really hadn't been very long, had it? Before Zenith could ponder more, Prof. Ivy walked in. She seemed pretty similar to how she had been before: dressed very professionally, her messy, dark violet hair--probably dyed--barely reaching her shoulders, matching well with the worn out look in her eyes. Clearly, she was just as stressed as she was on the boat from Vermilion. She was carrying a decently-sized box, presumably with something in it. Once again, Zenith's random thoughts were broken through, this time by Ivy's voice. "Wait, you're the one I talked to last week, aren't you?" "Yeah. Long time no see, huh?" Zenith remarked, in an attempt to lighten the mood. Had it really only been just over a week since he left home?
"What was your name again?" "I...prefer not to use my name. Used an assumed one on my Trainer Card." "Oh, yeah. You used...Zenith?" "Right." "So, as you see..." She set down the box. "You've earned a couple things by beating all three of my colleagues here. First of all, some money...actually, a pretty good amount. That'll be put on your account.
You also get..." She reached into the box, and pulled out what appeared to be a retractable fishing rod. "...One of these. They're cheap, mass produced, and not very good at catching much. But at least you'll have a way of getting something to eat in the wild." "Uh...thanks, I guess." "Yeah, I gotta admit, it's kind of underwhelming. You know..." The biologist seemed to be lost in thought for a few seconds. "I need some time to relax from some of the projects we've been running lately...and you seem capable enough in a fight. How about a battle?" "A...wait..." Zenith was caught off guard...not to mention a little low on energy. But on the other hand, this would be a good chance to get some firsthand advice from someone with a lot of experience. So what if he'd probably lose? Once again, his thoughts were interrupted. Once again, it was by Prof. Ivy. "I can understand if you don't think you can handle it, and I really should..." "Actually...okay." "Oh, great! I need to get my team ready, so you should probably heal yours. I take it you know where the healing machine is by now?" It took a couple minutes for Zenith's Pokémon to be completely recovered. Fortunately, there was somewhere for him to sit down and get some of his own energy back. He was worn out, but he couldn't pass this up...chances like this didn't happen very often. In a way, it was like a warmup for the Gym Leaders he was going to have to eventually face. And moments later, there he was, facing the very person that got him off his feet. It was time to prove he didn't need her keeping him walking any longer. Time to prove that he could stand on his own.
-Test of Character- The professor opened the battle, sending out her first Pokémon...yet again, another one Zenith didn't recognize. Before he could get out his Dex, Prof. Ivy started explaining. "She's a Lunamoth. Bug/Psychic. Native to the region. Kind of like a lot of bugs, they reach their adult form early but aren't very capable in battle past lower levels where they have a stat advantage. Moveset is as limited as you'd expect." So, who to lead with? Peregrine certainly wouldn't have much of a problem. On the other hand, Zenith didn't want to overlevel him. Besides, he might need him later. Two of the triplets had Grass types, after all. Pattle would have a little trouble, with his weak attacks and lack of a type advantage. What about Corundra? She seemed sturdy enough to take a few hits. And wasn't she only one level away from getting a STAB move? What if Prof. Ivy had more bugs? Corundra it was. Zenith released the Tricetra next to him, deciding to give her some advice first. "Okay, I think this one doesn't have any physical attacks, so you can't just let it come to you. It's probably also faster, so you can't just catch up to it. But it's weak enough to probably have to stay still to charge attacks before using them anyway, so try and hit it then, even if it means taking an attack. Got it?" Corundra nodded. As she walked into the ring, Zenith remembered one last thing: "Remember to use your horn!" Did he really have a shot at this? Well, there was only one way to find out.
