The Lunafly started the battle with a small shot of psychic energy, enough to disorient the enemy. Corundra, unfortunately, was hurt much more by it than expected. Then, against what both trainers were expecting, she immediately whipped around and struck the unaware moth hard. They actually both seemed to have done near equal damage. Apparently, Prof. Ivy was using a team at a pretty similar level to her subordinates. As Zenith ordered another Horn Attack, he wondered just how much Corundra could take... Corundra broke into as fast of a run as she could muster, and reached Ivy's Lunafly just as the moth readied another attack. She took a Confusion head on as she struck with a horn-first headbutt, and both of them hit the ground. This time, it was Corundra who struggled to get up. Zenith felt disappointed. He hoped the Tricetra would have been able to hold her own, but apparently this opponent was just too strong. Well, better play to type advantages, then. Zenith remarked "Well, looks like you're outmatched," and recalled Corundra. He sent Peregrine out in her place, and he looked as confident as always. Prof. Ivy seemed a little interested in him. "Oh, you have a Pipun, huh? By the looks of him, I'd say...you got him on the way to Valencia?" "Yep." "Well, I don't see this ending well for me, then." Apparently, she was trying to lighten the mood a little. "Can't agree more. Peregrine...blow that thing out of the sky!" Edited by Zenith, Dec 6 2010, 07:53 PM.

Peregrine sent a guest of sharp wind across the field, striking the Lunafly hard and sending it to the ground. However, it got back up. The attack wasn't able to finish the job. Peregrine then took the full force of a Confusion attack, taking some impressive damage himself. His instincts started kicking in. His opponent was weak, and seemed slower. One more attack would end it. Better to use more wind, and take advantage of the range. |

A second gust of wind was the moth could take before collapsing. Prof. Ivy wasn't too choked up about it. "Well, that's one. Unfortunate. But...that's only one." As expected, she revealed another Poke Ball. "So let's see what you can do against this!" A familiar figure emerged...a Solafly, this one colored normally, unlike Konami's. "I'm guessing you know how to deal with these." "I have an idea. And..." With one fluid motion, Peregrine was switched out for Pattle. "...I know how to deal with them." Suddenly, Zenith felt low on energy again. Maybe so many sudden movements was a bad idea. "Uhh...remember how you took care of the last one?" Pattle responded quickly with a Bubble attack. |

The Solafly used its superior speed to act first, striking Pattle with surprising force, but not enough to stop him from breathing a cloud of bubbles in the Fire-type's face, dealing more damage than Pattle took. Zenith was starting to feel tired again, but this hopefully it wouldn't compromise the match. "Get ready! Another one!" Edited by Zenith, Dec 8 2010, 04:33 PM.

Both combatants were looking badly damaged. Pattle wouldn't be able to finish this by himself, with how fast Ivy's Solafly was. That is, he couldn't without a little help. As the Pokémon exchanged blows, Zenith set down his backpack, rummaged through it, and took out one of the potions he bought a couple days earlier. Quickly calling time, he walked over to the platypus and sprayed the bottle of quick-acting medicine on him. Within seconds, Pattle looked a lot less damaged. Unfortunately, League rules stated that Solafly now got a free attack...

Two down. Did he really have a shot at winning this? Prof. Ivy didn't seem very fazed. In fact, she might have been laughing a little. "Well, then, time to get a little more serious." A flash of light revealed a figure large, light blue, and above all, ugly. "Go ahead. Look this one up." Looked a little like Psibian. An evolution? Just how strong was thins thing? Zenith's Dex could tell him. "Gorphibius...holy crap, that's bulky." "Yes, they have some impressive defenses, especially for this one's level." "Hm. They're usually a little more...colorful than this. Shiny?" "Interesting, how certain specimens are so differently colored. As you might know, the facility here specializes in studying the differences between similar species found in different parts of the world. Appearances, techniques, et cetera. But yes, this one's shiny." "Heh. Grass/Psychic, like Psibian." A Water type wouldn't help at all here. "Pattle, you won't help much here. Take a breather." Peregrine took his place, able to stand more of a chance. "This is gonna be harder than anything you've fought so far. Try and watch yourself. Got it?" Peregrine chirped. He may or may not have understood. "Try and stay close if you need healing. Ready?" The Pipun glided into the ring, and send a gust of wind at his opponent. |

Peregrine's attack struck as well as it has been...just as Gorphibius lept forward and smacked the bird in the face, sending him reeling a few feet. Good thing Zenith bought a lot of potions. Peregrine took another attack as Zenith regained his composure. Fortunately, it wasn't strong enough to negate the potion. Prof. Ivy seemed to be getting concerned. "Are you sure you're okay? You seem a little...off." "No, no, I...I got this." "Uh...okay, then." Okay, maybe he was getting worn out. But this battle wasn't going to last much longer. He could rest later. The gust of wind met Ivy's Gorphibius in midair, managing to take him by surprise, and stuck hard, sending the frog crashing to the ground. He croaked one final time, and fell unconscious. Another critical hit...and it couldn't have come at a better time. As Professor Ivy recalled her Pokémon, her mood seemed to lift again. "Hey, congrats! Way to hang in there; not many new trainers win that!" "Yeah, I...thanks..." Zenith could barely speak. As he started hearing his heart pound in his head, he was having trouble making coherent thoughts, and was struggling to even stand. "Okay, there's definitely something wrong. You need to relax, or something." "I...I...uh...uuh..." Zenith took a couple shaky steps forward. He felt his knees give, his figure hit the ground...then only darkness... -Visions (No Music)- "Ugh...why do we always get stuck with the boring stuff?" "Quiet...don't get on his bad side. Besides, at least we aren't doing any grunt work." "But, I mean, all we're doing is sitting here watching these...them." "Yeah...what are we using them for, anyway?" "He wouldn't say exactly...but he claims they're important." "I hope he knows what he's doing. Apparently they found out...it won't be easy paying them off for this one." "Yeah...hey, did one of them just move a little?" "Nah, come on. You're letting this get to you." Light...bright light. Zenith's eyes opened. How long was he out? Where was he? He felt a little too sore to sit up, but he could get an idea by shifting his head a little. He seemed to be in some kind of hospital bed. Prof. Ivy must have had him sent here while he was unconscious. He could make out the what looked like a couple machines next to it, and one appeared to be keeping track of his pulse. Huh...he just noticed a wire leading to a device strapped to his wrist. Maybe if he could...actually, he felt a little less sore now. Sitting up carefully, he looked around the room. It seemed pretty normal for a human hospital: medium sized for a single room, some minor furnishings, a TV for intended patients to watch, a pair of windows on one wall--the light from what was apparently the late afternoon was coming in through there--and a door that presumably led to a hallway. The best thing to do a this point would probably be to get someone's attention. As best he could, Zenith tried to call out: "Hello? Is anyone here?" His voice was scratchy, a little different that he was expecting...actually, his mouth felt really dry. He only heard silence for a few seconds...then footsteps...then the door opened. -Recovery- In stepped what appeared to be a hospital nurse. The aged, disillusioned face, the professional-looking uniform and the surgical mask draped around her neck showed how much of a far cry she was from the ones that ran the Pokémon Centers. And yet, she seemed to be in a decent mood. "Uh...hello? did you call someone?" "I *cough* Sorry. Just, anyone, I guess." "Wait, you're...excuse me for a moment." The nurse left the room. Zenith could hear her walk down the hall. Was she getting someone else? A couple minutes later, more footsteps echoed in. The nurse returned, followed by a woman who appeared to be a doctor and a Gardevoir. They seemed to be talking under their breath as they entered the room. "Someone called her?" "Yeah, she should be over here, she'll want to know." They turned to Zenith, and the nurse from before spoke. "Are you okay? Feel faint at all?" "No...but *cough* dry. Can I get some water?" "Sure, one moment." The nurse stepped out one more time. The apparently-doctor turned to the Gardevoir and nodded. The Gardevoir nodded back. She addressed Zenith herself. "Just relax for a few seconds, we're going to give you a psychic scan." Zenith suddenly felt what felt like a small wave of energy rush over him...like someone else was feeling everything he felt, for lack of a better explanation. It felt kind of calming, actually. The sensation left soon enough, and the Gardevoir turned back to the doctor and nodded. "Well, Viella here says she couldn't find any lasting effects. Unusual, but you're not exactly a normal case, anyway." "Wait...not a...what do you mean?" "Well, for one, do you realize how long you've been unconscious?" "What, a few hours, or...wait, how long has it been?" "...Three months." "What!?" The sudden outburst made Zenith start coughing again. Fortunately, the nurse had just returned with a glass of water, which he drank within seconds. "Ugh...are you serious?" "Please, stay calm. The last thing you want to do is overexert yourself." The ethereal sounding voice wasn't coming from either of the women. Viella must have been using telepathy. "Well, see, that's why we were surprised. People don't stay unconscious for that long under these circumstances. But you weren't exactly in a coma, either. You just seemed to be running on a low energy level, like you needed to recover." "Do you have any idea why I just fell apart like that?" "Well, that part is also...unusual. Our best idea is that...you were cursed." "Cursed? No offense, but isn't that a little...strange for a doctor to say?" "No, you see, you were Cursed...as in, the technique." "I know how it feels. Your very life force seems to slowly drain from you, you start to weaken over time, and struggle to stay conscious. I could rid myself of it by going into stasis, but you can't." "How the..." "We're just as confused as you. There have been so very few cases of this that we can't explain exactly why you're vulnerable to this. Normally, humans are immune. We do believe that on of the ghosts that appeared back in September may have done this, though." Wait...a sinister laugh...that Gastly...could it...but how? "I...Does anyone else know about this?" "Professor Ivy does, and she made sure we watched you. Typically, we would inform direct relatives, but you named none on your Trainer ID, and you're legally an adult, so we had no need to search for your parents or anything." "Hmm...fine. I don't want them to get involved, anyway. They'd just hold me back. Wait...what about my Pokémon? Has anyone been watching them?" "Ah, yes, Professor Ivy said to tell you that she's been taking care of them. Her facility has a large preserve, so she's been making sure they've been staying healthy." "I'll have to thank her later. ...Wait, where am I, anyway?" "Valencia General. We're a local hospital, and we were the closest ones that could watch you." "Oh, uh, I guess I should thank your staff, then." "You're welcome. Now you should probably get some rest." The nurse finally joined in. "Remote's on the table on your left, and Ivy will be getting a couple books for you. Said they would help you." "Hang in there." The three left. Had he really been out that long? What was he going to do now? ...Move on. He had to. There would need to be a few precautions, but he couldn't let this ruin his chances.
THREE DAYS LATER -Journey- Why did they insist on him staying around another day? Zenith was walking around his room effortlessly, reading one of the books Prof. Ivy gave to him. As he had found out, they were about the wildlife of the Orange Islands: their morphology, habits, techniques, and other useful things for a trainer to know. She remembered how little he knew. A nice gesture. Peregrine was standing in the sunlight let in by the windows, trying to rest. It seemed unusual, considering how much of a warrior he was. Corundra was in a corner of the room, sleeping. When did she usually need sleep? Was she nocturnal? These books didn't help him with Amayan Pokémon. Pattle was laying closer to Zenith than his comrades, and turned his head occasionally, exploring the room as best he could. Zenith looked at the Water type, flipped through a couple pages in the book, then looked at him again. A quiet "Hmm..." escaped his lips before a knock on the door interrupted him. It was Prof. Ivy. Apparently, she wanted to see him personally. "So, I heard you're leaving already?" "Tomorrow," Zenith replied, as he let the scientist in. "I'm actually feeling really good. It's like that...that Curse never happened. "Good to hear. I wanted to make sure you had a heads up." "Looking after me still, huh?" "Well...I feel like I need to. I'm a little worried, to be honest. I mean, what if you're one of..." "What?" "I...forget I said that. I was overthinking a little. Anyway, winter here isn't as cold as you're probably used to, but you'll still need some thicker clothes. You said you have some with you, right?" "Yeah. Probably a little overpacked, but I'll manage." "Also, I've arranged for more money to be added to your League account. Think of it as your reward for that battle." "Thanks. Thanks for the books, too." "You can keep those, actually. We have enough copies lying around as it is. And one more thing..." She set the package Zenith just noticed she was carrying on the table next to the bed. "...This is a better model of the fishing rod we give out. It's a lot more durable, so you'll be able to catch more than just Magikarp and Borin with it." Borin...he had just read about them earlier. Apparently, they tasted even more bland than Magikarp. "Good luck out there. My phone number is written on the side of the box, so call me if you need anything." "Thanks again, Professor. I think I can handle it from here." She left, and Zenith was alone with his team once again. His attention turned back to Pattle. "I think I might have a name for you." The platypus turned around. It was about time. The others were named right away. "Tell me how it sounds...Anatin." He seemed lost in thought for a couple seconds...then nodded confidently. "Glad you like it."
Zenith had a long road ahead of him. Route 202 was his next stop, leading to Tarroco Island...the location of one of the League's gyms. Could he rise above the countless other trainers who were never able to claim a badge? Yes. He could. He had to. |
